Why Donors Need Clearer Impact Reporting?
Those answers are often much harder to find than the donation button.
According to BBB Give.org’s 2024 Donor Trust Report, 76% of more than 2,100 U.S. respondents considered independent reviews of how charities spend their money very important. Yet only 54% said they knew what nonprofit “overhead” meant. And among those who believed they understood the term, fewer than half could correctly define it.
This highlights a broader challenge in charitable giving. Donors want to make informed decisions, but the information available to them isn’t always easy to understand or particularly useful in evaluating results.
Financial transparency matters, of course. Knowing how an organization manages its budget is important. But spending figures alone don’t tell you whether its programs are working or what difference they’re making in people’s lives. Low administrative costs aren’t necessarily a sign of greater impact, either.
What donors really need is a clearer picture of the work being done, the progress being made, and the evidence behind it.
For nonprofits, providing that level of detail isn’t always straightforward. Measuring outcomes, gathering reliable data, and communicating results all require time, expertise, and resources.
Candid reports that nearly 60% of U.S. nonprofits have annual budgets under $50,000. Many of these smaller organizations submit simplified public filings containing little more than basic organizational information. That doesn’t mean they’re doing less meaningful work. It means the information available to potential donors may not reflect the full value of what they do.
That’s the challenge we’re working to address with the albane Impact Score. Our goal is to make verified information about nonprofits and their impact easier to access and understand. Donors should have a better way to evaluate the organizations they support, based on credible evidence rather than financial figures or compelling stories alone.
At the same time, nonprofits deserve a way to communicate the value of their work without having to navigate an unnecessarily complicated reporting process.
No single score can capture everything a nonprofit does, and not every outcome can be traced back to an individual donation. But making reliable impact information more accessible can help donors make better-informed decisions and give nonprofits a stronger foundation for building trust.
Because knowing that your donation went through is one thing. Understanding the difference your support helps make is what keeps meaningful giving moving forward.
After you make an online donation, you usually get an email almost immediately. It confirms the amount, thanks you for your support, and gives you a receipt for your records. But what if you want to know what happens next? How is your contribution being used? Is the organization making progress toward the goals you care about?
